LightWild Lights Up O2 World Arena in Berlin

LightWild commissions one of the world's largest architectural LED lighting grids

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — LightWild today announced the completion of an exterior architectural lighting project for the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany. The project, one of the world's largest architectural LED lighting grids, spans across the entire south glass facade of the new arena that opened Sept. 10, 2008.

The approximately 15,000 square-foot (1,400 square-meter) installation displays motion graphics and video content on a massive scale, utilizing more than 7,000 controlled LightWild Pixels and 280,000 individual LEDs overall. The Pixels are housed inside of 117 custom-designed aluminum mullions with domed optical lenses that are spaced evenly across the entire width of the glass façade. Designed by LightWild Project Engineering in conjunction with the arena's architects (HOK Sport and JSK Architects), on-site construction management (ICON Venue Group), and owner (Anschutz Entertainment Group), the LED mullions seamlessly integrate dynamic lighting into the curved design of the arena facade.

"This arena project leverages LightWild's patents pending for façade lighting on even and curved surfaces," says Tom Stafford, President of LightWild. "The positioning of the arena on the East Gallery in front of the Spree River makes for dynamic viewing of the lighting grid from various angles and distances."

The size of the grid creates a light show which is clearly visible from more than a mile away. The LEDs are controlled from the arena control room via a LightWild-designed network.
